Daisy Ballenger

Daisy Shaver Ballenger, age 98 years, a resident of Wittenberg Village in Crown Point, Indiana, formerly of Shirley, passed away Monday, June 4, 2012 at Crown Point, Indiana, She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Hilton Ballenger in 1992.

Mrs. Ballenger was a retired school teacher having taught for over 42 years in various schools in Kentucky and Indiana. She was a faithful member of the Kennard Friends Church for many years and the Locust Grove Society. She began her teaching career in Kentucky in a one room school house in the early 1930’s. After coming to Indiana in 1940, she married Mr. Ballenger whom she met while working at the Indiana Village in New Castle, Indiana on February 1, 1941 from this union two son’s were born. Farrell K. Ballenger was born in 1947 and preceded his mother in death in 1989. Ronald G. Ballenger of Crown Point, IN now survives his mother as do three grandchildren, Martin, Mariaugh and Ben. Mrs. Ballenger was employed as a grade school teacher at Millville, Lewisville and Kennard Indiana and for 16 years at Fall Creek Heights in the Pendleton School Corporation. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Ball State Teachers College, now Ball State University, in 1962 after pursing the degree in summer school for 12 years. Mrs. Ballenger was the first female president of the Kennard Lions Club and succeeded in helping to maintain the viability of the club for several years. She was a self-taught painter and completed several canvases in oil and other mediums. She was the daughter of Jociepheign Sparks Shaver and Stonewall Jackson Shaver and was one of thirteen children. She was born March 23, 1914 in Cow Branch, Kentucky. She is survived by one sister, Edna of Bisbee, AZ and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with Dr. Ron Ballenger officiating. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements were handled by the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson.
